Meghana - you have a tendency to take the air out of my argument. I guess its an individual choice. But I see these lofty historical figures on one side, and women around who contradict them and men around those women who are more than happy to maintain the status quo.

In all of that, such articles - though factually (probably) right - seem very hypocritical. Infact to assign such a day to women - I find it demeaning (to women). Its almost like, we have 'bail poLa' and 'naag panchami', so why not have 'mahila deen'.

  4. @Abhijit's comment here and Meghana's statement:
I think both of you are correct in your own perceptive. I think this 'day' concept is one more of the fads to sell out greeting cards. :-) Jokes apart, I would really like to Thank and remember all those who have contributed to women's rights fight. But at the same time why a day for that? Shouldnt I thank everytime I vote? Everytime I able to go to office and achive something or thank them for being able to get education till its possible? You know sometimes Pune Mirror has small news sections which I rarely go to, but the news I read cant beforgotten. Like a woman being put on auction and being purchased, or being put at home just because that country does not allow masks outside and her husband doesnt want her to be seen by other men. I mean what world do we live in? But to even think that its unfair I should have right to 'think' and I do have. And for that right, I think the history and these people should be rememebered but not one day, it should be your actions.
Now about Abhijit's point: I read your blog too and I am not able to put a comment there. I think you are over-reacting. :-) I support your point above but still I think you are over-reacting. You remember Chitrahaar and Rangoli and Chayageet? Every year on Holi we have the song from Sholay and on Navratri a song from old 'Suhaag' movie. And I really get irritated by these songs and as well by the person who talks abt it. Like for Holi, yeh rango ka tauhar hai, jo jeevan main rang bhar deta hai etcte .How irritating? But can we do anything abt it? Its their (media, etc) bread-n-butter. So let them get that. :-) Yes it is demeaning to women to have a woman's day.But then you men have the 'Labour day' for you. :-) take that for now, later we can raise a request to United Nations for having Mens' day. Hehe its funny. How would you celebrate it? Imagine a mens' day?:-))) Just kidding.
    -Vidya.
